Richard Harris

Richard Harris is one of the most highly respected global Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) professionals over the last 30 years. He was inducted into the "ITS World Congress Hall of Fame" in 2015, with the following citation:

"An effective and charismatic champion and thought-leader of ITS for over 25 years, who selflessly promotes ITS in general, without commercial considerations or bias. Known, respected, trusted and liked by ITS professionals all over the world, his commitment in worldwide organizations continues to inspire and benefit the international ITS community."

Richard has organized, moderated and presented over 100 technical papers in plenary, executive, and special interest sessions at ITS World Congresses and Regional Conferences since 1994. He has served as a member of the ITS World Congress Board of Directors for 11 years, and International Program Committee for 14 years. He has been very active as an international ITS Subject Matter Expert and Faculty Member for the International Road Federation (IRF) for more than 15 years, and currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the IRF Intelligent Transportation Systems Committee. He served as Member of the Supervisory Board, Member of the Strategy Committee and Chairman of the Traffic & Transport Industry Sector of ERTICO, (ITS Europe), from 2010-2017.He was awarded the ITS United Kingdom Society "Rees Hills Award for Outstanding Contribution to ITS" by an UK Transportation Engineering Professional in 2010. 

Mr. Harris' ITS industry career began in 1974 with the United Kingdom Automobile Association (AA), where he helped manage the London Department of Transportation's Autoguide Demonstration scheme which involved the development and implementation of in-vehicle navigation.  From 1990-2002, he served as Principal Consultant with Ian Catling Consultancy, where he was a key member of numerous European Commission projects as well as being at the forefront of development of dynamic in-vehicle navigation systems, such as Autoguide, CARIN, TravelPilot, and SOCRATES.  He provided consultancy services to the UK Department of Transport, Rijkswaterstaat, GEC, Daimler-Benz, Mitsubishi, UK Department of the Environment, Welsh Assembly Government, Scottish Executive, Hong Kong Government, Stamford Research Institute, British Telecom, Siemens, Philips and the European Commission.  From 2002-2007, Mr. Harris served as Director of Intelligent Transport Systems for Faber Maunsell AECOM, where he served as the UK National leader of the ITS team for multiple major ITS  and telematics projects. From 2007-2009, Mr. Harris served as Technical Director for WSP Group Ltd., where he led the WSP Group client efforts in the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Europe, USA, Middle East and China. He played a pivotal role in securing European Commission funding for the EasyWay, STREETWISE, and CIVITAS Plus RENAISSANCE projects. From 2009-2011, Mr. Harris served as Director-Intelligent Transport Systems for Logica, leading the international management team for transport and logistics for multinational ITS teams operating in the UK, Europe, Middle East, India and Australia. He served as a Special Advisor for the UK Department of Transport, European Commission, and for the UK Road User Charging Demonstration. From 2011-2017, he served as Director-Communications and Marketing and Solution Director for Conduent, (Formerly ACS Xerox Services), where he was responsible for business development, marketing, business strategies, client liaison, and strategic alliance development in Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific on transportation and public-sector services as part of the senior management team. From 2017-2019, Mr. Harris served as Director- Europe and member of the senior executive team for HMI Technologies and Ohmio Automotion, for an Australia/New Zealand-based company developing the market for Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based automated electric shuttles to provide the first and last mile for smart mobility solutions. Since 2017, Richard Harris served as Principal for Real ITS Global, an independent ITS consultancy. Since November 2020, Mr. Harris serves as a Senior Associate for Argonaut International Consulting, Inc.
